KAHULUI, MAUI, HAWAII – Hale Mahaolu is pleased to announce the opening of applications for Liloa Hale, a new affordable rental housing community for seniors age 55 and older in Kihei.
Using land purchased from neighboring Hope Chapel, Liloa Hale is a collaborative project of Highridge Costa and Hale Mahaolu, bringing together many years of excellence to expand affordable senior housing opportunities on Maui.
Liloa Hale, located at 1745 Liloa Drive in Kihei, will feature 101 one-bedroom, one-bath apartments and 16 two-bedroom, one-bath apartments. The three-story senior housing community will also include private lanais, a multipurpose area, laundry facilities, a manager’s office, mailroom, and on-site parking.
“This is an exciting milestone for Liloa Hale and Hale Mahaolu,” said Anders Lyons, Executive Director of Hale Mahaolu. “There continues to be a tremendous need for quality, affordable senior housing on Maui. We are grateful for the collaboration of Highridge Costa and Hale Mahaolu helping bring Liloa Hale to our community.”
“Liloa Hale will provide 117 new homes and an opportunity for kūpuna to remain connected to the community they know and love,” Lyons added.
“The commencement of resident move-ins at Liloa Hale is an exciting milestone for our team and our partners. While this community represents the first collaboration between Highridge Costa and Hale Mahaolu, it is also the foundation of a long-term commitment to creating high-quality affordable housing opportunities on Maui. We extend our sincere appreciation to the State of Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiʻi Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC), and the County of Maui for their partnership and shared dedication to addressing the island’s housing needs. Together, we are creating a place that residents will be proud to call home for years to come,” said Moe Mohanna, President of Highridge Costa.
Applications will be available for pickup and delivery at the Hale Mahaolu Central Office, 200 Hina Avenue, Kahului, Hawaii 96732, from November 16 through December 4, 2026, Monday – Friday between 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
To be considered under the initial tenant selection process, completed original applications must be received at the Hale Mahaolu Central Office no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2026.
Applications received after the 3:00 p.m. deadline will be placed on the regular waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.
“We encourage interested seniors to obtain an application, carefully review the eligibility requirements, and submit a complete application by the December 4 deadline,” Lyons said.
All applicants must meet Liloa Hale’s age, income, and other eligibility requirements. For the initial lease-up, qualified applicants will be considered as outlined by Liloa Hale Tenant Selection Plan. Former Hale Mahaolu Lahaina tenants as well as Kula and Lahaina fire survivors are encouraged to apply.
“Liloa Hale is especially meaningful as Maui continues its recovery,” Lyons said. “The initial selection process recognizes former residents of Hale Mahaolu’s Lahaina communities and others who lost their homes in the wildfires, while also creating an opportunity for other eligible seniors seeking affordable housing on Maui.”
Liloa Hale is intended for seniors age 55 and older. The head of household or co-head must be at least 55 years old. Income limits apply, and households must meet applicable income and other eligibility requirements for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program and Hale Mahaolu’s tenant selection requirements.
Meeting a preference category does not by itself establish eligibility for housing. All applicants, including those receiving a preference, must satisfy the applicable eligibility requirements.
The current target move-in date for Liloa Hale is February 1, 2027.
