1. Decide on which housing sites you want to apply for

Hale Mahaolu offers affordable housing for individuals, families and seniors. Some sites, as indicated on the application form, are intended for seniors. Our other sites, referred to as “family sites”, can accommodate individuals and families. Browse the various sites in the Senior Housing and Family Housing sections.

2. Check if you meet eligibility requirements

Most sites have income limit requirements, and all residents must be able to achieve an “independent” living status. For more specific information regarding eligibility criteria, please call the respective Hale Mahaolu housing site you are inquiring about.

3. Obtain an application form

You can download and print the pdf application form below. This is a universal form that can be used to apply for any of the sites listed on the form. You must indicate which sites you want to apply for on the form.

Application Instructions

All rental housing sites owned and/or managed by Hale Mahaolu are listed on one application. The applicant must select which housing sites are being applied for by checking the appropriate box on the application.

  • Read the attached Hale Mahaolu Housing Application General Information.
  • Print clearly in ink.
  • Complete all information as required. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • Signatures required by all adults.
  • Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or national or noncitizen with eligible immigration status.
  • Check all of the Housing Preferences you want to apply with. Hale Mahaolu will not choose on your behalf.
  • Some housing sites are for seniors only; other sites are listed as for “family” for individuals and families with head of household over the age of 18.
  • There are income limits at most sites. The household gross income must be less than or equal to the established HUD maximum income limit for the household size. Visit the housing site page or contact the housing site for specific information.
  • Housing applications may be dropped off at any Hale Mahaolu location (Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to  12:00 p.m.) or mailed in to 200 Hina Avenue, Kahului, Hawaii 96732.
  • Completed applications are processed in the order they are received, on a first come, first served basis.
  • Complete the Supplement to Application for Federally Assisted Housing form if you are applying for subsidized housing.
  • Each Housing Site maintains and manages its own wait list. An applicant may only have one (1) active application on each individual housing site wait list.
  • After receiving the application, each housing site checked on the Housing Preference will respond to applicant in writing with its preliminary determination of eligibility. If the application is accepted, your name will be placed on a waitlist on a first-come-first served basis for upcoming vacancies. Prior to placement, you will be notified in writing and additional information and forms (verification of current income, assets, etc.) will be required.
  • All Hale Mahaolu housing sites have a No Smoking Policy and Drug Free Policy. Federally funded / subsidized housing prohibits the use of controlled substances including medical marijuana.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I apply for more than one housing site on the same application?

A. Yes. You can use the same application form to apply for housing at one or more of our sites. Please make sure that you meet the eligibility requirements for the sites you are applying for. Note: Komohana Hale is only available for individuals who are working in West Maui or are retired from employment in West Maui.


Q. What address should I mail or drop off my application to?

A. Hale Mahaolu, 200 Hina Avenue, Kahului, HI, 96732 or at any of the other listed sites.


Q. Who should I call if I have questions about an application I’ve already submitted?

A. For inquiries related to your application for a specific site, please contact that housing office directly.


Q. Will I lose my place on the other wait list(s) I’m currently on if I agree to rent at another Hale Mahaolu site?

A. No. Each site has a separate wait list which is maintained by the housing office. Your name will remain on the list for each site you applied for until you decline. After you decline a second time, your name will be completely removed from that sites wait list.


Q. What should I do if the contact information I provided on my application changes?

A. Please contact the housing office for each site(s) you applied for so that they can update the information on your application. You may also contact our main office at (808) 872-4110.

After Submitting the Application, What are the Next Steps?

After receiving the application, each reviewing site will notify you with its preliminary determination of eligibility. If the application is accepted, your name will be placed on a waitlist on a first-come-first served basis for upcoming vacancies. Prior to placement, you will be notified in writing and some additional information and forms (verification of current income, assets, etc.) will be required. A physical face-to-face interview must also be conducted at the site prior to the offer of a unit.
