Hale Mahaolu has been working tirelessly to locate our tenants by calling the contact phone number(s) we have for them. Below are our most recent estimates of the status of Hale Mahaolu tenants. These are preliminary figures that we have gathered in a very difficult communications environment. They will change as we continue to gather information.
Eono – 35 Total Units
26 tenant households have been located (including the resident manager’s unit)
3 individual tenants are missing according to their family members
4 individual tenants reported deceased by media and/or authorities
2 units vacant / unoccupied at the time of the fire
Lahaina Surf – 112 Total Units
102 tenant households have been located
7 tenant households we have been unable to contact
1 individual tenant is missing according to their family members
2 units vacant / unoccupied at the time of the fire
Komohana – 20 Total Units
15 tenant households have been located
5 tenant households we have been unable to contact
Crossroads – 20 Total Units
5 tenant households have been located
1 individual tenant reported deceased by media and/or authorities
14 units vacant / unoccupied at the time of the fire
“We are deeply saddened by reports of the passing of Hale Mahaolu tenants in the recent wildfires in Maui,” said Grant Chun, Hale Mahaolu executive director. “Our thoughts and condolences are with their family and loved ones. Other Hale Mahaolu tenants remain missing, and we are profoundly worried about them. We must brace ourselves for more bad news in the days and weeks ahead. We are here to provide any necessary assistance and support during this difficult time.”
In contrast to assisted living or skilled nursing facilities, Hale Mahaolu Eono tenants live independently. They provide their own transportation, supply their own meals and plan their own activities. Hale Mahaolu does not offer housekeeping, in-home aides or nursing care. Lahaina Surf, Komohana Hale, and Crossroads are developments for low-income families. Tenants at all four buildings come and go as they please, with no obligation to inform us of their whereabouts.
Some media have reported that Hale Mahaolu Eono may have been among the first major structures destroyed by the fire.
Hale Mahaolu is eager to contact our tenants to confirm they are safe and to help them find housing, maintain their housing subsidies and register for aid from FEMA. We also have financial assistance, food and household goods available to help our tenants. We encourage them and their families to call us at (808) 872-4100.
Out of respect for the privacy of our tenants and their families during this difficult time, and in keeping with our typical practice, we are not publicly naming any of our tenants – including those who officials or media have identified as deceased. We are continuing to gather information and will provide updates as soon as we are able to do so.
